Area Information for Montana and surrounding areas

imagine

A jewel of a small western town, its historic face lifted buildings and bustling, two block long main street (no rush hour here!) nestled in an exquisite valley, framed by mountain ranges in every direction...

imagine

This friendly little town sits in the heart of some of the finest big game hunting, fly fishing, snowmobiling, horseback riding country in the lower 48, with close proximity to fabulous skiing and golf, and perhaps some of the prettiest topography on the planet earth...

imagine

The area for scores of miles around this town is free and open, large ranches being preserved as working western outfits through Conservation Easements, and fine resource stewardship, a startling contrast from the "ranchette grid it and ravage it" mentality seen almost everywhere else in the west...

imagine

Within five to thirty minutes from main street, world class, world renowned blue ribbon waters, such as the Madison, Ruby, Big Hole, Jefferson and Beaverhead Rivers beckon, as do hundreds of productive creeks, streams, sloughs, and lakes...

imagine

Eight hundred friendly, busy, active, diverse people pulling together as a community, proud of their little town that offers what some communities ten times their size can't rival; a full array of retail, restaurant and other services, 20 bed hospital, two full-time docs at a modern medical clinic, great volunteer fire department, outdoor trap and skeet range, outdoor lifeguard staffed community pool, new three million dollar school complex, new library, tennis courts, and yep, even two paved roads!

imagine

The modern dichotomy of an old west town still steeped in the tradition of cattle drives down main street, but linked to the rest of the world by fiber optics...

Now imagine no more! This wonderful slice of heaven really does exist.

Welcome to Sheridan, Montana.

LOCATION

Sheridan is just an hour and a half from Yellowstone Park, thirty five miles east and north of Dillon, MT, fifty three miles south and east of Butte, MT, 87 miles south and west of Bozeman, MT, and thirty miles south of Ennis, MT.

In addition to just being 1.5 hours from fabulous Yellowstone Park, within immediate proximity to town is the Red Rocks Wildlife Refuge, Lewis and Clark Caverns, famous restored and fun national historic landmarks, Nevada City and Virginia City, and a host of other attractions and historic points. And this place is steeped in history, Lewis and Clark, Sacajawea, the Virginia City gold mines, the Highway men, and the Vigilantes.

CLIMATE

Sheridan lies in High Desert Plateau country, at about 5,100 feet above sea level. Peaks around town scrape the sky at 11,000± feet. Rainfall is sparse, only about ten inches per year including snow fall (twelve inches of snow to one inch of water) although the high mountains surrounding town get pounded with 18 feet or more of that all valuable commodity during the winter.

Growing season is approximately 92 days. Typically the warmest month of the year is August, which sees daytime temperatures in the 80's, and perhaps 90's. The coldest month of the year is generally January, which sees average temperatures above zero, with night times in the minus 10's or 20's. The valley is renowned as being temperate, far more temperate than most of Montana and Wyoming, and cattlemen from four states winter their cows here, a sure sign of a banana belt. There is rarely snow on the valley floor, and that snow that does fall usually melts in a matter of days. Believe it or not dry fly fishing can start before spring! Sheridan enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year, and very low humidity, so bring that sunscreen.
